Maternity & Newborn Photography FAQs
When should I book my maternity photo session?
The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 32 and 36 weeks, when your bump is beautifully defined, and you’re still comfortable enough to enjoy the session. It’s the perfect moment to capture that glow before your little one arrives!
When and where do maternity photos take place?
Outdoor maternity sessions in Hawke’s Bay often happen at the magical golden hour when the light is soft and flattering. It gives that dreamy, timeless feel. If sunset feels too late, we can find a shaded spot or adjust the timing so you’re still comfortable.
The best locations are places that mean something to you. A favourite beach, your backyard, somewhere you walk often. And if you’re unsure, I’ve got plenty of ideas up my sleeve!
When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?
The first 7 to 10 days are ideal. Babies are still sleepy and naturally curled up, which makes the window perfect for capturing those adorable, peaceful moments.
That said, if those first days feel like a blur, don’t stress. Beautiful newborn photography can still happen a little later. The most important thing is that you feel ready!
Who can join the fun?
A standard maternity session is perfect for up to 4 people. If your crew is bigger or the grandies want to be involved, let’s chat beforehand so we can plan it properly.
And yes, fur babies are 100% welcome too! Natural maternity photography is about capturing this season as it really is, with the people (and animals) who matter most.
What should we wear for maternity and newborn photos?
Choose outfits that feel like you and highlight you as the centrepiece! Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and pastels are perfect, especially outdoors in natural light.
And the best part, I have a selection of stunning dresses available for you to borrow during your maternity or newborn session, completely free of charge.

What is included in a newborn photography session?
Newborn sessions are all about slowing things down and soaking it in. Those tiny toes, little fingers, and the way they curl into you, it goes so quickly.
Sessions take place in the comfort of your own home, which keeps everything relaxed and familiar. I’ll bring what we need, including simple props and outfits for mum and baby. All you need to do is settle in and cuddle your little one.
In around 60 to 90 minutes, we’ll create heartfelt newborn photography that feels honest and natural.
What if my baby is unsettled?
That’s totally normal. Newborn photography is gentle and flexible. We go with the flow and allow time for feeding, changing, and cuddles as needed. I’ll make sure we capture those sweet moments when everyone is calm and content.
If your baby is having a particularly tough day, we can reschedule once so you feel relaxed and supported.

How do we forget the camera is even there?
Think of your session as a family adventure. A chance to hang out, explore, chat, and maybe even dance (so don’t forget your favourite playlist!). And if a cheeky bevvy helps you relax, I’m all for it.

What if the kids are sick or the weather is bad?
Life happens, and we can totally reschedule within reason.
But here’s the thing. If it’s just a bit windy or overcast, let’s roll with it. Wind adds beautiful movement to your hair and clothes, and overcast skies bring a soft, dreamy vibe to your photos.
